Kullu Backpacking: One Valley First

By Refuje Research Desk · 3-min read · Updated

Kullu is not one backpacking loop. Start with Parvati for Kasol, Manikaran, Tosh and Kalga, or Tirthan-GHNP for slower forest days.

Kasol is where Indian backpacking culture goes to plateau. The town itself is tiny — one street market, riverside cafés, German Bakery, a few hostels — and most travellers immediately push deeper into the Parvati Valley. Chalal (a 30-minute walk over the bridge) is half-overrun with loud cafés now. Tosh, three hours further up by shared cab from Barshaini, has the same Israeli-cafe energy but cheaper rooms and better mountain views. From Tosh the Kheerganga trek is a 6-7 hour ascent through Rudranag temple, but as of late 2024 the local administration has shut down camping at the top and removed the hot pool — you do the climb for the views and return the same day. The interesting move is to stay longer in one of the smaller side villages: Kalga and Pulga sit 30-45 minutes uphill from Barshaini with no road access, and remote workers report month-long stays there at well under metro rent. The other branch worth knowing: Tirthan and Jibhi (on the Aut side of Kullu) attract a different crowd — slower, more workation-friendly, less party — and connect back to Delhi via the same Volvo network without backtracking through Manali.

What the data says

What travellers actually figure out

  • Kheerganga camping at the summit was shut by the local administration and the hot pool removed in 2024; trek 6-7 hours up from Tosh and descend the same day rather than booking a night at the top. Expect bluetooth speakers + party-tourist culture on the climb that's broken the meditative reputation the trek used to have.
  • Tosh works better than Kasol as a base — share taxis from Barshaini are around ₹300, rooms at Pink Floyd or Shiva Mountain (or Whoopers further in) offer the headline mountain views, and prices stay 30-40% under Kasol.
  • Manikaran Sahib gurudwara is the half-day worth doing — 20-25 minute local bus from Kasol market for around ₹20, langar runs continuously, and the hot springs there are still operational (unlike Kheerganga's).
  • Old Manali is overrated and crowded — multiple repeat visitors recommend Burwa, Shanag, or the Naggar side instead if you actually want pine forest and quiet. Café 1947 / Drifters / Lazy Dog / Johnson's handle the cafe scene; Alt Life is the popular workation venue (proper desks + WiFi) but ALSO the venue where a ₹25,000 Indian-Army-impersonator scam was reported in January 2026 — don't hand cash to anyone you meet there.
  • Group-tour pricing is cheaper than you'd expect — Safar Wanderlust (Pune-based) charges ₹8,000 for a 5N/6D Delhi-Manali-Solang-Rohtang-Sissu-Kullu-Kasol-Manikaran loop including paragliding (₹1,800/10 min) and zip-lining (₹500/2 km); shared-with-strangers format that recurring solo travellers report enjoying.
  • Booking the trip through Thrillophilia is a documented refund-trap risk — a ₹53,025 Leh-Manali booking was cancelled by them (Force Majeure / floods) and the company offered only credit alternatives until the traveller raised a legal dispute; refund eventually processed after 5 months. Use only if you accept the cancellation friction.
  • Kalga is the slow-travel pick if you have a week or more — no road access (30-45 min trek up from Barshaini), strong café culture for remote workers, and transport from Mumbai works out to around ₹14,400 round-trip including the Bhuntar Volvo and share taxi.
  • The Aut-Jibhi-Tirthan corridor is the alternative for workation + quieter trekking — Mozo Inn & Cafe Jibhi as a known base, Shringa Rishi Temple + Chehni Fort walkable from town, Jalori Pass via Shoja into Raghupur Fort (2 km hike) + Serolsar Lake. Road from Shimla via Jalori is narrow, broken, and traffic-heavy — drive in daylight only.
  • Government buses + Zingbus Max Volvo (9600 luxury, free meals included) handle the cheap end of Delhi-Manali — overnight Volvo from ISBT or Majnu Ka Tilla ₹1,200, Kasol to Manikaran ₹20, Manikaran to Barshaini ₹70-100, and the Aut bus stand also boards Manali Volvos so you can chain a Tirthan-Jibhi loop without backtracking through Manali.

Frequently asked
Is Kheerganga still worth it now that camping is shut?

Yes for the views and the climb itself, but plan it as a day-trek from Tosh, not an overnight. The top camping ban and hot pool removal (2024) means there's no longer infrastructure to stay up there.

Should I base in Kasol or Tosh?

Tosh for views, quieter nights, and 30-40% cheaper rooms. Kasol for market access, café variety, and easier transport. Many travellers do 1 night in Kasol + 2-3 in Tosh.

How do I get from Delhi to Kasol on a backpacker budget?

Overnight Volvo Delhi → Bhuntar (₹1,200, 12-14 hr) from ISBT or Majnu Ka Tilla, then a shared cab or government bus from Bhuntar to Kasol (~30 km). Bus from Chandigarh Sec 43 also goes direct.

Is the Parvati Valley safe for solo travellers?

Mostly yes — but watch out for the Alt Life Old Manali scam reported Jan 2026 (man impersonating an Army officer took ₹25k from a backpacker; Cyber Police complaint filed). Don't hand cash to anyone you've just met.

What's a slower alternative to Kasol-Tosh if I have a week?

Either Kalga/Pulga (30-45 min trek up from Barshaini, no vehicle access, great for remote work) or shift entirely to Tirthan Valley + Jibhi + Shoja on the Aut side — same forest-and-river vibe with a fraction of the crowd.
